Midlife: A Phase, Not an Age – Are You Treading Water or Finding Your Flow?
You know that feeling when everything should be fine… but something feels off?
You’re not burnt out exactly, but also not fired up. You look around and realise you’re ticking boxes, managing responsibilities, but the spark’s missing. Maybe your body’s not doing the things it used to. Maybe your identity feels a little blurry now the kids have moved out. Or maybe you’ve just caught yourself wondering: Is this it?
This is midlife. And no, it’s not a crisis — but it is a transition. One that can feel like you’re just treading water... or, with the right momentum, like catching a new wave entirely.
I know this because I’ve been there.
For me, it showed up quietly — a sense of flatness, a craving for old songs from my early 20s, a longing for a version of myself that felt lighter, more energised, more me. I felt disconnected from my work and sport, both of which had once given me a strong sense of identity. I was deeply sad that it seemed my best years had passed — and it was all downhill from there. I realised my routine had enabled me to mask the conflict that was simmering below.
So I made some changes. Slowly, and with help — because I couldn’t do it alone.
I picked up tennis — something I’d never done before — and loved learning something new without the pressure of being good at it. I started practising yoga to settle my nervous system and rebalance my energy. I shifted my workload to include learning and growth, and found something I genuinely see myself ageing well with.
I’m now more conscious about food, sleep, coffee, alcohol, and recovery — not out of restriction, but respect — and I care for my body and mind in a new, self-compassionate way.
My love for the endurance coaching I still do is renewed — but I show up differently: with more clarity, more confidence, and more joy.
None of this happened overnight. But step by step, I created my midlife momentum. And I want others to know it’s absolutely possible.
