Since when did looking after your health make you a ‘fitness freak’?
Would this label be a barrier to you starting a movement routine?
I keep active. I enjoy physical activity. Whilst I was once quite serious about my sport, I now enjoy mowing the lawns or house cleaning for its benefits to my health and mood just as much as running, swimming, lifting, hiking or biking.
And it’s always been that way. As a child I remember admiring the milk boys and rubbish men who ran for their work. So my brief stint as a cycle courier was a dream job!
Our bodies were designed for movement. Modern life removed it — our biology didn’t.
Here’s the reality: People who you see participating in physical activity aren’t always having the greatest of times, but generally they are doing great things for their wellbeing.
Sometimes I do it because I’m excited about the activity.
Other days I only go because I’ve promised I’ll meet someone.
Some days I don’t feel like going – and many sessions feel hard.
But I do it all the same because know that I’ll be better in 10 years or 30 years because of what I do now.
If you’re human, your body was built to move.
The question is — how are you honouring that
If movement feels like something you “should” do rather than something that fits your life, then that’s exactly the work I help people with. I also feel honoured as a health coach to witness people of all kinds as they overcome their inertia and take their first steps – whatever they may be.
Drop a note in the comments of the less-than-normal physical activity you enjoy because of how it makes you feel.
Mine’s gardening.
