“I know what to do, I’m just not doing it” — unpacked

If I asked you to rate yourself from 1–10 on how much you’re actually doing to support your health and wellbeing, what would your score be?

Many people find themselves saying “I know what to do… I’m just not doing it.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

So why is there often such a gap between insight and action — between knowing and actually doing?

Usually, the reasons are real.

Life is busy. Demands compete for our attention. We’re stretched between work, family, responsibilities, expectations, and exhaustion. At the same time, our mindset, beliefs, and perceptions quietly shape the choices we make every day.

That’s why people can deeply understand the importance of exercise, nourishing food, sleep, or stress management — yet still struggle to follow through consistently.

There’s real wisdom in the airline safety reminder to “put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others.”

Yet many of us feel guilty prioritising our own wellbeing.

In coaching conversations, I listen carefully for the signals of what may be getting in the way. Together, we gently explore the hidden barriers that may be keeping someone stuck.

Often this involves:

  • reconnecting with values and deeper meaning that motivate action

  • challenging beliefs that no longer serve them

  • creating environments that reduce friction and support consistency

  • building understanding around why change matters personally

Lasting change is rarely about simply trying harder.

More often, it’s about uncovering what’s been blocking progress in the first place.

You don’t have to stay stuck in the loop of inaction.

If you’re curious about what may be getting in your way, I’d love to have a conversation.
